Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is an online, full-text database covering a wide variety of topics, such as the Death Penalty, Gun Control, Genetic Engineering, Censorship, Endangered Species, and Terrorism. It is the electronic counterpart to the print series titled Opposing Viewpoints, published by Greenhaven Press, of which Lamson Library now holds more than 300 separate titles. The Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center includes more than 400of the titles from the print series and other Greenhaven books, amounting to over 6,600 articles, more than 4,700 statistical tables/charts/graphs, more than 700 court-case overviews, nearly 850 images, and links to more than 1,800 reviewed and subject-indexed Web sites. Both the online database and the print series are most valued for collecting pro and con articles, editorials, and speeches showing “opposing viewpoints” on various controversial subjects. In addition, the “Research Guide” section of the database, written by Opposing Viewpoints editorial staff, “is designed to help students analyze the information they retrieve, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare for oral or written presentation of their opinions on social issues”.
