We are pleased to announce a new department in Plymouth Magazine. In keeping with Plymouth State University’s motto and commitment to service, our new department is called “Ut Prosim” (“that I may serve”) and will showcase the various ways in which members of the PSU community demonstrate their dedication to the needs of our local community and to the wider world.

Correction: Plymouth Magazine inadvertently credited Alan MacRae for a photo on page 17 of the Fall 2004 Annual Report issue. The photo was actually taken by John Hession.

Letters to the Editor

My husband, John, graduated from Plymouth State in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his master’s degree in 1965 from Columbia University Teachers College. John was a science teacher for 38 years, 24 of which were at Lenox (Mass.) Memorial High School teaching physics and chemistry. He was also golf coach for 23 years [there].

When John died July 29, 2003, I set up the John D. Barrett Memorial Scholarship Fund … to give a deserving senior at LMHS a college scholarship to pursue the sciences. To raise money for the scholarship, I am having a golf tournament on May 17, 2005 at Stockbridge (Mass.) Golf Club, where John was a member and on the board of directors. PSU First in State to Meet New NCATE Standards

Plymouth State University’s programs in initial teacher preparation, advanced educator and professional school personnel have received reaccreditation approval from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) through spring 2010. Plymouth State is the first New Hampshire school to be accredited under the exacting new standards mandated by NCATE in 2000. Read More

Hurricane Charley "Hits" PSU

The PSU Weather Center Web site received more than 5,000,000 hits during Hurricane Charley in August. As the storm was approaching Florida’s coast and shortly after landfall, the site was receiving more than 50 requests per second. That represents more than 300,000 viewers per hour. Read More

Helping New Hampshire's Teachers

Under a grant from the New Hampshire State Department of Education, Plymouth State University has formed a partnership with 12 school districts, the North Country Educational Services (NCES) and the Southeastern Regional Education Services (SERESC) to help schools improve mathematics education. More Students Make PSU Their First-Choice

In its second year as a University, Plymouth State has seen its undergraduate enrollment increase by 171 students over last year’s total.

Twice each year, PSU takes an official census snapshot of undergraduate enrollment on a specific date called R+30. Last year, R+30 for the fall semester was September 30, at which time Plymouth State recorded 3,848 degree-seeking students as registered and identified. In fall 2004, at R+30 a total of 4,019 students were counted. Read More

PE Center Has New Defibrillator

PSU’s Physical Education Center has been given a new automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) through the Federal Rural AED Grant Program, run through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The AED is now available in the PE Center’s front office, just in case. Read More

Moniz Elected National NASW Secretary

Professor Cynthia Moniz.

Professor of Social Work Cynthia Moniz has been elected secretary of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). She will serve as a member of the national board of directors and executive committee. She was also appointed by the organization’s president to serve as chair of the national committee on women’s issues. Read More

Putting Research to Work in the Community

Photo by John Anderson, On The Spot Photography.Brian Eisenhauer wanted students in his research methods class to experience a taste of real-world research. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center-an educational center in Holderness visited by thousands of schoolchildren each year-needed to design an evaluation of their exhibit on solar energy. So last year, Eisenhauer (an assistant professor in PSU’s social science department) gave his students the task of creating a research design, distributing questionnaires to visitors and compiling the results in a report for the Science Center. The students’ research showed that visitors found the exhibit educational, interesting and effective. The research also offered the Science Center important feedback on what types of exhibits worked for visitors, and which failed. Read More
