Music, Theatre, and Dance
Student dancing

Plymouth State University’s music, theatre, and dance programs encourage students’ creative spirit as they perfect their technique under the guidance of master performers and teachers. The integrated and collaborative department gives students of every discipline a chance to shine.

Plymouth State offers the BA major in music, which provides a liberal arts education with a heavy emphasis on musical study and performance, and the BS in music education, an accredited program that certifies graduates to teach vocal/choral, instrumental, and general music in grades K–12.

The BA program in theatre arts includes options in acting, dramatic writing, music theatre performance, and theatrical design/tech.

Both the music and the theatre arts programs include contract options, which allows students to work with faculty to tailor a course of study suited to their individual interests.

The Plymouth State University dance experience reflects the importance of building artists as creative agents who gain the skills to develop high-impact projects and performances. Students may create a self-designed bachelor’s degree through the interdisciplinary studies program that integrates dance with one or more concentrations such as business, education, or theatre.

Student performers have many opportunities to take the stage at the University’s magnificent Silver Center for the Arts, the region’s major performing arts center.  The Silver Center boasts first-rate theatre, recital hall, and practice facilities, and student and professional performances include opera, ballet, symphonic and chamber music, and dramatic productions.

Plymouth State Theatre produces a variety of shows each season, staging upwards of six to seven shows in three theatres. The season typically includes two musicals. Directors, designers and other artists involved are chosen from the faculty and staff, from regional and national professionals, and from the student body. These productions are open to all PSU students by audition.
