Contemporary Piano Festival Competition

handsEligibility: Piano students currently enrolled in grades 9-12

Repertoire: Solo piano works (individual movements or single pieces) by 20th and 21st century piano composers. Memorization of repertoire is strongly encouraged.

The following list of possible composers is not exclusive:

Barber, Bartok, Bernstein, Bloch, Bowles, Britten, Copland, Creston, Debussy, Dello Joio, Griffes, Hovhaness, Ibert, Ives, Kabalevsky, Kennan, Khachaturian, Kodaly, Krenek, Lees, Lutoslawski, Martinu, Menotti, Milhaud, Mompou, Muczynski, Persichetti, Pinto, Poulenc, Previn, Prokofiev, Ravel, Rorem, Scott, Session, Shostakovich, Starer, Stravinsky, Tansman, Tcherepnin, Toch, Turina, Villa-Lobos.

One published copy of the music to be performed must be submitted at the competition by the entrant to the adjudicators. Reproduction of music by hand or machine is not allowed.

Total Time: Students may enter works of any length, but the maximum performance time will be determined by the number of entrants. Notification of maximum time will be sent with confirmation times. Average performance time is normally five minutes.

Adjudicators: Each entrant will receive a written evaluation of his/her performance by Plymouth State University faculty members.

Awards:

  • A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all competition entrants.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the highest placing competitors.
  • A limited number of competition entrants will be chosen to perform in the recital at 3:15 p.m.
