Student Accompanists

Qualifications

Students must be enrolled in Keyboard Accompanying (MU 2100) before they will be eligible for hourly wages (exceptions will be made only for those students hired on work study).

Requirements for Keyboard Accompanying (MU 2100, .5 credits) are:

  • Accompany one two-credit voice major, or
  • Accompany four instrumental students on Student Recitals or juries.
  • Other possibilities must have prior approval by both the Performance Studies teacher and the piano instructor.

Compensation

Student pianists may receive either accompanying credit and/or hourly wages for accompanying voice and/or instrumental students.

Maximum pay per week will be for eight hours. Exceptions will be taken into consideration if the accompanist performs in special performances.

The student accompanist will be paid as follows:

Voice:
  • Two credit voice student-accompanist paid for one and a half hours per week
  • One credit voice student-accompanist paid for one hour per week

These hours include all rehearsals, lessons, Student Recitals, juries and other miscellaneous events associated with that particular voice student.

Instrumental:

  • One work on a Student Recital-accompanist paid for two hours total
  • One work on a semester jury-accompanist paid for two hours total

Junior/Senior Recitals:

  • A half recital-accompanist paid for six hours total
  • A full recital-accompanist paid for 12 hours total

These hours include rehearsals, coaching, the jury and the recital performance time.

The accompanist must file their weekly hours in duplicate with the piano instructor by noon each Thursday. The student may be asked to secure the signature of each faculty member for whom they accompany at each coaching session to confirm attendance at rehearsals, etc.

Rehearsals

The accompanist must have worked out all technical aspects of the music prior to rehearsal.

If the student soloist needs more time with his/her accompanist, it will be the student’s responsibility to pay the accompanists directly at the time of the rehearsal. See above details for allotted time under Vocal and Instrumental Accompanying.

Exceptions

Exceptions to the above regulations can be made only by the consensus of Performance Studies teachers and the piano faculty.
