October 19th, 1997 by Adam

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The home court advantage helped Plymouth State College capture third place Sunday at the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Championships at PSC’s P.E. Center Courts.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth captured individual titles in four of the six singles brackets and two of the three doubles brackets, and came away with first place.

The Corsairs, who earned the title for the second year in a row, won the tournament with 23 points. Runner-up Southern Maine, which won the other two individual singles titles and the third doubles crown, finished second with 14.5 points, followed by third-place Plymouth State with 13, Western Connecticut with 7, UMass Boston with 4.5 and Rhode Island College with 2.5.

Plymouth State had finalists in two singles and two doubles brackets, but was defeated in all four matches. Sophomore Jen Lemire (Manchester, NH/West) advanced to the finals at No. 4 singles, but was defeated by Stephanie Hauser of UMD, 6-1, 6-2, while senior Kris Roberge (Berlin, NH) was a finalist at No. 5 singles, but lost to UMD’s Shannon Kelleher, 6-2, 6-1.

PSC’s other four singles entries were all eliminated in the semi-finals – senior Kate Loeber (Cranston, RI) at No. 1, freshman Lauren Kruse (Pitman, NJ) at No. 2, junior Sarah Schutzendorf (Fayetteville, NY) at No. 3, and freshman Liza Tallarita (Warwick, RI) at No. 6.

In doubles competition, Plymouth State played in the championship matches at both No. 1 and No. 2. Loeber and Schutzendorf were defeated in the finals at No. 1 by UMD’s Kelly Berger and Mary Bourque, 6-1, 6-1, and Lemire and Roberge were knocked off by USM’s Erin O’Brien and Sara Goodine, 6-3, 6-1.

Roberge, who was known as Kris Nolin before getting married this past summer, was selected as PSC’s Homecoming Most Valuable Player, and received the Lydia Briggs Award.
