PLYMOUTH, N.H.- The beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains are the
backdrop for America’s newest quarter which was unveiled at Plymouth State University in a February 21 event sponsored by the U.S. Mint and the U.S. Forest Service. The quarter, which features Mt. Chocorua on one side, is the 16th in a series of “America the Beautiful Quarters” program. More than 300 local elementary school children looked on as United States Mint Acting Director Richard A. Peterson, New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan, N.H. 2nd District Congresswoman Annie Kuster and U.S. Forest Service Supervisor Tom Wagner posted a design of the coin to a backdrop on the stage of the Hanaway Theatre, marking the ceremonial release of America’s newest coin. PSU President Sara Jayne Steen said the event was a wonderful opportunity for the University.

“This coin is  a national recognition of the treasure that we have  in the White Mountains,” Steen said. ‘It celebrates a beauty and grandeur of New Hampshire; it says something significant to the nation.”

The U.S. Mint provided each child in attendance with an uncirculated White Mountains quarter; the Littleton Coin Company, which  co-sponsored the event  with Meredith Village Savings Bank, provided  coin folders as well. The America the Beautiful quarters program began in 2010 and will continue for 12 years.
