March 5th, 2010 by Adam

PLYMOUTH, N.H.-
Plymouth State University Professor of Social Work Stephen Gorin has been elected to the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization made up of the nation’s leading experts on social insurance. NASI’s interest includes such social insurance systems as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and related social assistance and private employee benefits. Academy membership recognizes those who have made distinguished and continuing achievements in the field. Gorin said his election to the organization is humbling.

“I have long respected NASI and their work, and feel truly honored to have been asked to become a member,” Gorin said.

Election to membership in the National Academy of Social Insurance is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a social insurance professional. Dr. Julie Bernier, PSU Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, said Dr. Gorin’s election to NASI reflects highly on the University’s commitment to excellence among its faculty.

“Dr. Gorin has been an exceptional leader in this area, and we are proud of his work. I know he will be a valued member of the Academy,” Bernier said.

Gorin has a long history of national and regional recognition for his expertise in social welfare policy. He served on President Clinton’s Health Care Task Force, the Advisory Council of the Center for Mental Health Services in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (1995-96), and the Coordinating Committee of the National Medicare Education Program (2000-2004). Dr. Gorin also served as a delegate to the 2005 and 1995 White House Conferences on Aging and the White House Conference on Social Security. He has written and spoken widely on Social Security, Medicare, and health care reform. He currently serves as editor-in-chief of the journal Health & Social Work. Gorin is also the past president of the New Hampshire chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and was the chapter’s Social Worker of the Year in 1992.
