White Mountains Experience

This Winterim, the White Mountains Institute, in partnership with the Center for Rural Partnerships and the Rural Studies Council, will be offering the first in an ongoing series of intensive, field-based, multidisciplinary academic sessions known as the White Mountains Experience (WME). The WME gives students a broad awareness of the diverse human experiences, cultures, and ideas that emerge from rural New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Quebec. Through integrated writing, critical thinking, and research, this rich and holistic program fosters intellectual curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, use of technology, and a desire for lifelong learning, and prepares students to be productive citizens of the region and of the world.

In addition to the educational benefits described above, the WME can:

  • help a student complete his or her general education requirements ahead of schedule;
  • make up for lost time when behind on credits;
  • be used as electives or toward the completion of a minor (such as Rural Studies, Women’s Studies, or Peace and Justice Studies).

 This year, the WME will address a specific topic of importance to the White Mountains region across two sessions – one held during the winterim session (January) and one held over the summer session. Topics will be explored through the lens of four general education directions courses: Self and Society and Scientific Inquiry for the Winterim session, and Past and Present and Creative Thought for the summer session. The capstone of the WME will be a multi-day field consortium in the White Mountains region.

Students who register for both general education classes during Winterim are eligible to take the 1 credit WME Field Consortium at no additional tuition (mandatory fees and course fees apply)! WME courses offered during Winterim 2012

Students will use the White Mountains region as a foundation for exploring issues such as local food infrastructure, recreation and tourism, the arts, social and environmental sciences, planning, and resource management. During winterim, students can choose one of two month long courses or they may choose both. With either course, they will also take the field consortium.
