Upon initial connection to the PSU Network, all personally-owned computers and other devices will be scanned to insure compliance with established security and safe computing standards for our network. Computers and other devices which do not meet established guidelines will be quarantined and users will be directed to the ITS Help Desk in order to seek assistance in bringing their computers into network compliance.
Connections in the Residential Halls
All individual residential living areas have cable television and wireless network access available at no extra charge. Wired physical data jacks do exist in all residential areas but, due to full availability of wireless network access, these jacks are not activated by default. Students having devices that do not have integrated wireless connectivity (such as traditional desktop PCs) should consider purchasing an inexpensive USB wireless adaptor from a retailer of their choice. Students having devices that still require wired connectivity, and cannot be retrofitted with a wireless adaptor can contact the IT Help Desk at 603-535-2929 once they arrive on campus for assistance with their needs.
Wireless network access is also available in most residential and campus common areas and outdoor ‘green’ locations Apartment residents have access to computers in the Centre Lodge during regular building hours. PSU has established security and safe computing standards for our network. All personally-owned computers and other devices must be registered in order to connect to the PSU Wireless network. Pre-registration begins each Fall on August 1 and is available on-line at the link above.
Minimum Standards for access to the PSU Wireless network
Personal computers will also need to meet the following minimum standards:
- PC running Windows 7/8 OR an Intel based Mac running MAC OS X 10.6 or newer.
- An approved antivirus program must be installed an enabled for automatic updates (Windows only)
- A firewall must be installed and enabled
- Automatic Operating Systems updates must be configured
Residential Cable Television
Each residence hall room includes one cable television jack. Students need to bring their own television and coaxial cable. A digital converter box is not necessary with the default lineup of channels offered. A digital converter box would be necessary if a student were to contract with Time Warner for service over and above, such as HD channels, HBO, etc. The current channels available are:

Prohibited network hardware in the Residential Halls
Pursuant to Plymouth State University’s Acceptable Use of Computing Resources Policy: The installation, implementation or use of any unauthorized computing device or protocol, which includes but is not limited to:
- Routers
- Wireless Access Points
- Switches/Hubs
- Any dynamic addressing protocol such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
- Any host name resolution service such as Domain Name System (DNS).
These devices interfere with the network protocols on campus.
