Seminar will be offered off-site, on-line and on PSU campus.

4.01.5      New Course: Teaching Strategies, Methods and Resources in HE Ed

4.03      Art Education                                                                                                       Haust

4.03.1      Curriculum  change: Add photography to the list of Disciplines

Motion is to have photograph as one of the advanced concentration options

Proposal: The Art Department would like to change the B.S. in Art Education degree in the following way: In the section of the catalog that describes the Advanced Concentration of 8- 10 credits on 3000/4000 level courses, add the discipline of Photography to the existing list of seven disciplines.

Justification: The Art Department now has a minor in Photography and consistently offers two introductory 2000 level courses and three courses at the 3000/4000 level. The discipline now offers enough courses at the appropriate level to meet the requirements for an Advanced Concentration.

                                                            MOTION APPROVED 14-0-0 (1 absent)

4.04      Chemistry                                                                                                              Duncan

In the area of fundamental content knowledge:

                                                            MOTION APPROVED 14-0-0 (1 absent)

4.04.2      Curriculum Change: ED3350 Classroom Planning Management and          Organization for Middle and Secondary Educators

Proposal:  Addition of ED3350 Classroom Planning Management and Organization for Middle and Secondary Educators to the list of required courses for students pursuing the Chemistry Education (7-12) option of the Chemistry B.S.

Justification: Exit interviews with completers of the chemistry education program (2 chemistry education students as of 12/2011, and 2 physical science education students who followed a similar curriculum guide) and feed back from cooperating teachers revealed that students are underprepared in the areas of lesson planning and Understanding by Design (UbD). While these are addressed in CH4340 Science in the Secondary School, a more in-depth introduction to these essential components of lesson and unit planning is need. Additionally, the classroom management skills taught in CH3350, like developing classroom rules and working with families, will prepare students better to respond to challenges met during their student teaching practicum (CH4420 Secondary Student Teaching, Chemistry Education).

5.0       OLD BUSINESS

5.01 Update from committees

5.01.1  Bylaws                                                                                                     Kuras

The bylaws committee discussed how the CTE will look in the future and hopes to soon come forward with a motion to reflect how the group will function as a unit with a rewriting of the by-laws.  The committee is recommending two versions to the group soon to help see what direction the council feels it should be go.

5.01.2  Dispositions                                                                                        Earick

The dispositions committee will be putting together a formal report that the council will be able to review, and give feedback on. This will be discussed more at the January Retreat.

5.02     Exit GPA                                                                                                        Cucina

Currently student teachers need to enter and exit the program with a 2.5 or a 2.7.  There used to be a rule that they would not be certifiable if at the end of student teaching their GPA dropped below the 2.5/2.7 requirement.  This will be discussed further at the January retreat. Deb will also look into whether there is a direct correlation between students who have a does not meet at midterms to the final results.

6.05     SAT scores vs Praxis scores

Irene has asked the State CTE if SAT scores could somehow allow our students to

become exempt from taking the Praxis.  She will look into this again.

[expandable title="More About Erica"]

Why did you choose to come to Plymouth State?

“I chose Plymouth State because the University is close to my hometown and I love the look and feel the campus. Plymouth is the perfect size, it has a great business program, which is my major, and I love the surroundings around the campus, the skiing and hiking.”

What do you like best about your major/academic program?

“The thing that I like best about the business department and classes that I take is that a lot of the teachers are very friendly and approachable. Even if I am taking a class in a lecture hall the teachers still get to know you and will recognize you when they see you outside the classroom.”

What activities are you involved in outside of class?

“Outside of class I am a member and the vice president of Women’s rugby, I am a member of MAPS (which stands for Marketing Association of Plymouth State) I am an admission rep (so I give tours of campus) and I work on the Rec. Programs marketing team. At work I work with other students to maintain Rec. Programs Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and we take pictures and videos of all the events and intramural sports that Rec. Programs run.”

How have you changed since you first arrived at PSU?

“I have changed a lot since I started attending PSU. In high school I was very quiet when talking to people and not very outgoing. Since then I have become very outgoing and gained self confidence. Everything that I have done while at Plymouth State has helped to build my self confidence.”
