Academic Advising Syllabus

 

Definition:

“Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning.”  (NACADA)

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Value the advising process as part of the academic experience.
  • With the guidance of an academic advisor, make effective decisions concerning their academic and career goals.
  • Be knowledgeable about General Education requirements of PSU.
  • Use campus resources and services to assist them in achieving their academic, personal, and career goals.
  • Follow through when referred to appropriate campus resources.
  • Graduate in a timely manner based on the curriculum plan.

Advisor Responsibilities Student Responsibilities
Communicate the university’s curriculum, requirements, policies, and procedures. Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures.
Encourage and guide students to define and develop realistic educational goals. Clarify personal values and goals.
Assist students with academic planning consistent with their abilities and interests. Participate proactively in the decision-making process.
Listen carefully to questions and concerns. Prepare a list of questions or concerns before each. advising visit
Match students’ needs with available resources and make referrals. Follow through on suggested actions, resources, or referrals.
Monitor students’ progress. Keep a personal record of academic progress.
Discuss the relationship between academic preparation and the world of work. Accept responsibility for academic decisions and performance.

Important Dates for First Semester

  • September 1-2: Fall Orientation for Fall 2014 Admits who did not attend a June session
  • September 2: Advising Meeting with all 2014 admits // Convocation // Fall 2014 Classes begin at 5:00pm
  • September 8: Add/Drop Processing deadline (full semester, first half, or first quarter) // Confirmation deadline
  • October 1: Last day to submit a Degree Request for December 2014 graduation
  • October 13: Fall Holiday (no day classes; classes begin at 5:00pm)
  • October 15: Six Week Grades due
  • October 16: Six Week Grades available online // Advising To Go! – 11:30-1:30 in the HUB
  • October 27 – November 7: Advising Weeks
  • October 27: Second Half begins // Winterim 2014 registration begins
  • October 31: Deadline for first semester, first year students to drop a full-semester course
  • November 2: Add/Drop processing deadline for Second Half courses
  • November 4th & November 5th: Evening Group Advising, location TBA, 5:00-7:00pm
  • November 7: Add/Drop processing deadline for Individual Enrollment, Independent Study, Internship, Practica, Performance Studies, or Auditioned Courses // Withdrawal Processing Deadline (full-semester courses)
  • November 10-21: Initial Registration for Spring 2015
  • November 11: Veteran’s Day (closed)
  • November 26 – December 1: Thanksgiving Recess (no classes); Classes resume at 8:00 a.m. December 1
  • December 1: Last day to submit a degree request for May 2015 or August 2015
  • December 5: Withdrawal processing deadline for Individual Enrollment, Independent Study, Internship, Practica, Second-Half, Fourth Quarter, Performance Studies, or Auditioned Courses
  • December 15-19: Finals Week
  • December 26: Fall 2014 Final Grades due by faculty
