Reporting Crime

University Police

Unfortunately, there are times when we become victims of a crime. One thing that causes a real concern for law enforcement is that often times crime is not reported.  This happens because sometimes people do not feel the crime is severe enough to "bother" the police, or that the police will not be able to do anything about it anyway. While it is often true that the crime might not be solved, certainly the chances of it being solved are lessened considerably when the police are not even aware that the crime occurred.

It is important to understand that the police do not look upon reports of crimes, no matter how petty they might seem, as being bothered. After all, it is their job right? And maybe it is true that the police are not going to assign a team of detectives to find a stolen pink flamingo lawn ornament, but if there is a pattern of petty thefts in a particular neighborhood, the police will know to put more effort into patrol. Besides, when the police know that your pink flamingo is missing, and they happen to see Joe Badguy walking down the street carrying one under his arm, they might just be able to get it back for you and you won't have to explain to Aunt Martha why you don't display that lovely gift she gave you for your wedding!

We strongly encourage the reporting of all crimes. We are always willing to take your report and discuss your options with you. One other thing to consider is that in some cases your stolen or vandalized property is covered under your insurance, and the insurance company will surely want a copy of a police report in order to process your claim. You have a lot more to lose by not reporting the crime.

What if you see something suspicious? Should you report it? Of course you should. Don't worry about being thought of as a nosey neighbor. Often times your neighbors appreciate that you are concerned enough about them to be on the look out for criminal activity. Don't want to get involved or don't want your name associated with the report? You do not have to give your name, but obviously we like to know who it is in case we need a witness later on, but you can give the information without divulging your identity.  You can also submit a report through the Silent Witness Form.
