Refund of Overpayments

Accounts that are overpaid as a result of actual payments received (not memos or authorized aid-see online bill) will be refunded as follows based on the funding source:

  1. Title IV Aid (Perkins, Pell, SEOG, ACG, Smart, PASS, PLUS, Stafford) overpayments will be automatically refunded to the student if the amount of Title IV aid exceeds the cost of tuition, fees, room and board.  Exception: If the PLUS Loan is the last payment to be received, a refund check will be cut and mailed to the parent, unless the Bursar's Office receives authorization to issue the check to the student.
Note:  The federally required refund could result in a balance due to PSU if there are unpaid miscellaneous charges (late fees, parking fines, library fines etc...) and we do not have the student's authorization permission to use their Title IV funds for these charges.
  2. The TuitionPay Plan from Sallie Mae overpayments will be issued to the student upon request, unless the Bursar's Office is notified otherwise by the person who contracted with the company.
  3. All other types of overpayment will be issued to the student upon request.

Refund Requests

Students who wish to be refunded for an overpayment on their account, must submit a request in writing to the Bursar's Office.

For requests received before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, refund checks will be available for pickup or placed in the mail on that Friday after 12 noon. Requests received after Tuesday will be available the following Friday.

Note:  A thorough audit of the student's account is performed after the refund request is received but before the check is produced.  The acceptance of a refund request does not constitute the guarantee of a refund check.
