Gene Savage '58
Gene Savage, '58 is retired and lives with his wife Joan in Barrington, NH and Fort Myers, FL. Savage received his undergraduate degree from Plymouth State College in 1958 and his Master's degree from Boston University in 1963 and also received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 1990 from Franklin Pierce College. Savage's career spans 35 years in secondary and post-secondary education. First as a teacher-coach and Guidance Director in four high schools in New Hampshire and Vermont. In 1967 he joined the Admissions staff of the University of New Hampshire as an Associate Director of Admissions and in 1968 became the Director of Admissions. In 1978 he was promoted to Dean of Admissions. He was later appointed to the position of Vice-Chancellor for University System Relations where he served until his retirement in 1993.
Following his retirement from the University System he accepted a position of Senior Government Relations Advisor at the Law Firm of Rath, Young and Pignatelli. Savage served on the Board of Trustees of the College Board, as well as the Boards of Berwick Academy, Odyssey House, Eastern States Exposition, Wentworth Douglass Hospital, The American National Red Cross, the New England Advisory Council, the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America and a founding member and chairman of the Plymouth State University President's Council. He served on the Regional Student Advisory Council of the New England Board of Higher Education for 10 years and was chairman for 5 years. Lastly, he served as a College Admission Consultant in Africa, South America, East Asia, and Canada for the US Department of State for 13 years. In 1999 he was elected by the PSU Alumni Association to serve as a Trustee on the USNH Board of Trustees from which he retired in 2007.
Savage has received numerous awards including: NH Distinguished Citizen Award from the Daniel Webster Council of Boy Scouts, the Distinguished Service Award and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the PSU Alumni Association, The Thomas More Award from St. Thomas More Church, The Distinguished Service Award from the New England Association of College Admission Counselors, The Profile of Service Award from UNH Alumni Association, The Granite State Award from Plymouth State University and the Chancellor's Medallion for service to the University System Of New Hampshire.
