Sportsmanship

Recreation Programs believes that good sportsmanship is vital to every intramural contest. In order to encourage proper conduct during games, officials, supervisors and administrative personnel shall make decisions on whether to warn, penalize or eject players or teams for poor sportsmanship. These decisions are final. The following may be considered as evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct:

  1. Profanity
  2. Intoxication
  3. Unnecessary delay of game
  4. Striking or shoving an opponent
  5. Arguing with officials concerning decisions (Discussion is allowed as long as it is done in a mature manner by the team captain.)
  6. Derogatory and abusive remarks toward an opponent or official.
  7. Any action that shows disregard for the rules or policies of the Intramural Sports Program.
  8. Disrespectful conduct toward officials or opponents (by players, coaches, or spectators)

Violation: Abusive conduct toward an official or opponent, resulting in ejection from the game.

First Offense: Minimum of one game suspension.

Second Offense: Minimum of 30-day suspension. A team captain is responsible for the actions of the team. The conduct of the players and spectators, before and after the game, is as important as the conduct during the game. The team and the organization it represents will be held responsible for the conduct of players at all times.

Individuals may be suspended from both programs (intramural sports, sports clubs, aerobics) and facilities (fitness room, court room, cardio theatre) in the HUB for an indefinite amount of time.

Team and individual conduct violations:

  1. Team Violations:

    a) Intramural Sports Probation places a team on a probationary status (which includes every member on that team's roster) that could cause a suspension from the intramural sports participation for any further unsportsmanlike conduct. The term of probation may be set for a particular sport, for a semester, a year or an indefinite period.

    b) Suspension from the Intramural Sports Program prohibits the suspended organization and its individuals listed on the team roster from participating in any team sports during the period of the probation of not less than 30 days.

  2. Individual Violations:

    a) The disciplinary measure that may be taken in case of individual unsportsmanlike conduct include measures listed above for a team, except that in case of suspension an individual may not participate in any activity, whether it is a team or an individual sport. Any action taken against an individual does not preclude the right of the Director of Hartman Union and Student Activities and/or the Assistant Director for Recreation Programs to take actions against the organization which he/she represents for the same incident of unsportsmanlike conduct.

    b) Any player ejected from an intramural contest for unsportsmanlike conduct or flagrant abuse of an opponent is automatically suspended from the next game his/her team plays. This person is also subject to further disciplinary action by the Director of the Hartman Union and Student Activities and/or the Assistant Director for Recreation Programs.
