Courses Being Offered During the Spring 2010 Semester
Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy (BU 3080-F1), Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00pm-6:15pm
-
The average American benefits from an array of nonprofit organizations that support causes as diverse as social services, healthcare, education, the arts, historical preservation and scientific research. How did the civic sector evolve and how do non-profit organizations function within a democratic society? What is the role of charitable foundations, government and individual donors in sponsoring research, advocating for public policy and building livable communities? This course will examine the history, culture and governance of nonprofit organizations and charitable foundations in the United States. Each session will offer opportunities for exploration of the historical context and modern landscape of the nonprofit sector through the use of discussion, research, and skill development in non profit operations. Join CfRP’s Fran Belcher for this introductory course for the Spring 2010 semester, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00pm-6:15pm. (fmbelcher@plymouth.edu)
Community Research Experience
- This coming Spring Semester there will be an innovative course, SS4994 Community Research Experience (CRE), offered by Mark Okrant (Tourism Management and Policy) and Thad Guldbrandsen (Center for Rural Partnerships). As students conduct unique real-world projects on behalf of communities, they receive careful oversight and mentorship from the two professors in the course. Students who enroll in this class will get the chance to make a difference in the communities they are serving. Last year's students reported that this course was one of the most meaningful experiences during their time at PSU. The course meets on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 6:00pm. Interested in challenging yourself in a new way? Contact Dr. Okrant (mokrant@plymouth.edu) or Dr. Guldbrandsen (tcguldbrandsen@plymouth.edu). The experience will be memorable.
- This course will include a two week field study visit to the United Kingdom with site visits and educational workshops at Findhorn Ecovillage (Scotland) and the Center for Alternative Technology (England) where participants will meet committed professionals with unique competence and experience in the area of sustainability. The course will include the themes of renewable energy, transportation, land use, alternative building practices, water and waste management, and local agriculture practices. This offering is open to all majors for undergraduate or graduate credit. An additional trip fee is required to cover the travel and field study expenses.
