Student Opportunities

North Country Student Fellow Program (hours vary by project):

The Coös County Outreach Initiative provides seed funding and institutional support for collaborative partnerships between PSU faculty, staff, and students and businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations based in Coös County. As part of this initiative, the North Country Student Fellow Program provides funding for students to intern with existing entities, OR to establish a new business in Coös County. This funding supports student stipends and modest expenses associated with travel and project start-up costs.

Weeks Act Centennial Research Assistant (10-15 hours per week):

A graduate student is sought to provide research and administrative assistance in support of PSU’s multidisciplinary celebration of the centennial of the Weeks Act and collaboration with Weeks State Park in Lancaster. The student will work in collaboration with Weeks State Park staff and volunteers and PSU faculty and staff to support research, improved exhibits at the Park. Candidates for this position must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Northern Forest Innovation Inventory Research Assistant (10-15 hours per week):

An undergraduate or graduate research assistant is wanted to independently research interesting and innovative jobs and workforce opportunities in rural forested regions around the globe. Student will play a lead role in presenting findings and drafting a final report. Student must have strong written and oral communication skills, strong internet and library research skills, creativity, and the ability to work independently. While this project will be completed prior to the end of Fall semester, opportunity exists for a successful candidate to continue work during Spring semester. This opportunity will provide meaningful professional development and contribute to the student’s resume and work portfolio.

Higher Education Inventory Research Assistant (10-15 hours per week):

An undergraduate research assistant is wanted to independently gather information about post-secondary educational opportunities for displaced workers and others in Northern New Hampshire, Vermont, and elsewhere in the Northern Forest. Student will play a lead role in presenting findings and drafting a final report. Student must have strong written and oral communication skills, strong internet and library research skills, creativity, and the ability to work independently. While this project will be completed prior to the end of Fall semester, opportunity exists for a successful candidate to continue work during Spring semester. This opportunity will provide meaningful professional development and contribute to the student’s resume and work portfolio.

AmeriCorps volunteer opportunities:

The Center for Rural Partnerships has two AmeriCorps student research assistant positions for Fall 2009. (All PSU students are eligible to become AmeriCorps volunteers. Interested students should contact Linda Corriveau: ext. 53026)

  1. AmeriCorps Position – NFHERN (8 hours per week):

    An undergraduate student is needed to support the Northern Forest Higher Education Resource Network (NFHERN), a consortium of colleges and universities that is committed to expanding educational resources throughout the region. The student will:

    1. reach out to peers in other colleges and universities by expanding the use of web-based communications, including the electronic NFHERN newsletter and other social networking media;
    2. serve as student journalist for NFHERN, reporting on faculty, staff, and student engagement in the Network ;
      and
    3. assist with the coordination of a major summit of Northern Forest colleges and universities.

    A successful student will have an interest in both journalism and internet-based communication; possess excellent written and oral communication skills; be able to conduct internet and library research; have a healthy measure of creativity; and be able to work independently.

  2. AmeriCorps Position – CCOI (8 hours per week):

    An undergraduate student is needed to support the Coös County Outreach Initiative (CCOI), a program designed to engage PSU faculty, staff, and students in collaborative projects throughout the North Country. The student will:

    1. serve as a liaison between the Center for Rural Partnerships and the larger PSU student body, actively recruiting students for participation in CfRP/CCOI projects;
    2. promote and publicize CCOI and the work of the CfRP among faculty, staff and students;
    3. plan and coordinate CCOI-related events in conjunction with off-campus partners;
    4. conduct community needs research in support of faculty project design and evaluation;
      and
    5. assist with funding proposals to support the work of CCOI-related projects.

    Student must have strong written and oral communication skills; strong internet and library research skills; creativity; and the ability to work independently.

Community Research Experience (SS 4994):

This course provides hands-on learning experiences each spring semester for undergraduate seniors. Students work directly with off-campus partners and the course professors, consulting on real-world projects that improve the quality of life in New Hampshire. The projects and small group format provide significant opportunities to participants, and past students have reported that it was a highlight of their undergraduate career. The course fulfills requirements for majors in Social Science and Environmental Science & Policy—other majors are welcome. Students may conduct projects in the following areas: environment, economy, community development, tourism development, social marketing, and more. Interested students please contact Dr. Guldbrandsen or Dr. Okrant prior to registering for this course--permission is required to register. Community groups, nonprofit organizations, municipal governments, and others are invited to send requests for assistance.
