English Writing

Beacon Press, Boston, MA

Technology has changed the way we communicate as a community and a culture. This summer I had the privilege to internship at Beacon Press, a publishing company that has been around for over 150 years. This internship fit my major well, because it combined my disciplines of English and Business…using them to reach people with social media, working with Facebook, Twitter, and blogging for companies. I used Facebook to research groups relevant to our authors’ attended audience, and from there I was able reach a whole social network of people. I find the field of publishing to be an interesting one, it allows for a lot more creativity, and I value that. Because of this internship, I feel more confident and also have a better idea of what type of job and atmosphere to look for in my job search. All in all this was a success.

The main classes so far that it has related to are all excel classes such as Business Statistics and Business Computer Applications. Other classes that are good and relate well would be all the finance, accounting and management classes. The main one should be Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Financial Management.”

“I had a nice long talk with an associate about the work environment and the potential careers you can get into, how she started out, and how she made it through the years. She also helped me understand the basics behind the documentation of the portfolios as well as the software system they use for annual write-ups on clients portfolios. I also had a coworker come into my office and help break down the process and procedures behind the hospitality commercial real estate side. She explained how things are run and why certain decisions are taken and why some decisions are not taken throughout the hospitality business side. Completing a credit-bearing internship takes time, and time is critical when I’m trying to balance a full-time job, job search, and perform well at the internship. I went over an annual review and discussed events taken place with the banking industry with the Assistant VP. I try to ask thousands of questions just because the knowledge is so valuable to me and throughout the process I have learned a lot!”
