GENERAL SERVICES
-
All students, on-campus or off-campus, part-time or full-time, continuing education or degree-seeking, are given access to appropriate technological resources.
-
Degree-seeking students are automatically given authorization through which they can access the technological resources.
-
Continuing education students may receive authorization to access technological resources upon request.
-
An e-mail account is set up for each student.
-
Every academic building and residence hall on Plymouth's campus has public service access to Plymouth's web page through kiosks (computer terminals) typically located in building alcoves. They provide convenient access points to web-based information and e-mail. Students can access
mySILAS, a student information look-up system from any of the kiosks, computer clusters, and the Internet using WWW.
-
Students also receive Internet service in their on-campus room/apt with no connection fee or monthly service fee. Students are able to stay connected to family and friends, keep up with campus events and do research for class projects.
-
For those students who do not own their own computer, each residence hall and the Center Lodge offer workstation clusters for student use 24 hours a day.
COMPUTER CLUSTERS
There are more than 30 computer clusters, for student use, on campus within academic, administrative, and residential buildings. Within these clusters there are over 500 individual computers with access to the Internet and World Wide Web. Some computers are Windows-based PCs while others are MacIntosh. The Computer Science Department and the Natural Science Department also contain UNIX workstations. The clusters located in the main academic buildings are generally available for student use when not being used for instruction or otherwise restricted. One computer cluster in the Library is reserved for Library Instruction. The remaining clusters are general purpose clusters to which students have access whenever the building in which they are housed is open.
ITS makes a point to put the newest computer equipment in the general-purpose library clusters to support students working in the library.
Twenty of the twenty-five computer clusters in conventional classrooms are in multimedia classrooms. These classrooms provide faculty with the ability to present enriching material using many forms of media.
ITS HELP DESK
The Help Desk provides technical phone support and walk-in service for the entire campus. Knowledgeable students staff the Help Desk and can answer questions regarding passwords, print quotas, or answer general application questions. A link from
www.plymouth.edu/infotech
to the Help Desk gives up to date information on Help Desk hours and availability.
RESIDENTIAL NETWORK PROGRAM (ResNet)
ResNet provides on campus students with telephone, computer network and cable television services. ResNet services keep students connected with family and friends in addition to supporting their academic and social commitments. ResNet student technicians called Residential Computer Consultants (RCCs) provide technical assistance for each residence hall and the WMAC apartments. The service fees are included in the student's initial housing cost.
TECHNOLOGY AND LEARNING CENTER (TLC)
The Technology and Learning Center provides technical support for WebCT and course development and audiovisual and computer equipment for students, faculty, and staff to borrow for
University related activities. The equipment includes tape recorders, multi-media projectors, video camcorders, photo cameras, screens, easels, PA systems and more. Students often find having access to this equipment helpful in preparing presentations for the classroom or in pursuing student activities. The Center also provides access to new media technologies such as non-linear video editing and advanced presentation software.
TECHNOLOGY SHOP
Plymouth as an educational institution is able to offer discounts on Dell and Apple computers to students and parents. The ITS department is an authorized sales and service center for Dell and Apple Computers. It is a convenience for students to be able to bring their computers in for authorized warranty work on campus saving the time necessary to transport computers to a point of purchase for service.
