What is the DO NOT
CALL registry?
The registry was created to offer consumers a choice regarding telemarketing
calls. The National Do Not Call Registry is managed by the
Federal Trade
Commission. The National Do Not Call Registry gives the consumer an
opportunity to limit the number of telemarketing calls received. *On October
1, 2003, when the National Do Not Call Registry goes into effect,
most
telemarketers will be required to remove the numbers that are on the Do Not
Call Registry from their call lists.
Can I register my cell number & my room number?
Yes. You can register up to 3 numbers at one time on the web site (www.donotcall.gov).
Can I register by phone?
No. Plymouth State University residence halls have phone numbers that are
hidden by a PBX (private branch exchange) telephone system and cannot be
matched by the National Do Not Call system. Students can, however, register
their phone number(s) on the Web site (www.donotcall.gov) using the Register
page.
Why does the National Registry need my e-mail address?
When you use the web site to add a number to the National Do Not Call
Registry, they send an email as part of the registration process. It is
necessary that you click on the link in the email to finalize your
registration. They also use your email if you request to verify your
registration online. Your email address will not be provided to
telemarketers or the public.
If I register my phone, will it stop all telemarketing calls?
No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most,
but not all, telemarketing calls. You may still receive calls from political
organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which you
have an existing business relationship (up to 18 months after your last
purchase or delivery from it, or your last payment to it, unless you ask the
company not to call again) . If you make a specific request to that company
not to call you, however, then the company may not call you.
I changed rooms or dorms and got a new number, do I need to re-register?
Yes, you need to register the new phone number.
Do my roommate and I both have to register?
No. Only one registration must be completed.
Once I register, will I ever need to again?
Yes, but not anytime soon. The National Do Not Call Registry expunges names
every 5 years.
