General Education

Student studyingPlymouth State University provides opportunities for students to cultivate the mind in ways that will lead them to full awareness as adults and to lives in which occupational achievement is balanced by social responsibility, cultural experience and personal happiness. To realize this aim, the curriculum includes courses designed for general education experiences as well as courses intended for specialized study and pre-professional training.

General education at Plymouth State is meant to ensure that students possess the skills expected of educated persons in our society and share in the breadth of knowledge that has shaped human culture. Skills in communication, quantitative reasoning, library use and computer use are essential. Students should be educated in certain areas of knowledge or understanding: fine and performing arts, global, historical, literary, philosophical, scientific, social and psychological and technological. Course work in these areas acquaints students with the breadth of knowledge and imparts an appreciation of the influence of each area. Finally, students should become capable of integrating these various perspectives as they apply to specific topics. Because it is important to study fields outside the major after attaining a measure of intellectual maturity, the general education program requires that students use their elective hours to complete an upper-division course component.
