Arts in Education Summer Institute: Putting the Power of the Arts to the Test (AR 5560.05)

Knowing your students involves more than just a set of standardized test scores. Learn how an arts rich, community-based classroom can facilitate authentic cycles of assessment and instruction and help each child develop a sense community, place and self-worth.

K-12 teachers and administrators will learn how arts integration can differentiate your teaching and reach all students. Participants will experience dynamic hand-on workshops presented by New England artists and develop a toolbox of activities to take back to their classrooms. Through workshops and discussions, participants will explore how the languages of visual art, drama, movement, music, and creative writing can inspire students and open doors to understanding. The workshops will also involve activities that celebrate and explore the environment and cultivate a sense of place. Final projects allow individuals or teams to create projects that will be immediately applicable to their learning environment. Special Topics in Art: Exploring Encaustic Painting with Beeswax (AE 5560.01)

Encaustic, meaning, “to burn in” in Greek, is an art form dating back to the5th Century BC.  Used as a contemporary medium it is a versatile method ofpainting with a beeswax based paint and a heated palette.   This hands-on studio course will introduce participants to  safety, supports, encaustic history and contemporary use while providing demonstrations and opportunity to practice and apply  2D techniques which include making encaustic medium,application, fusing, color mixing, etching, texturizing, graphite and Xerox transfers, collaging, embedding and incorporating found objects.

Participants will further explore 3D applications which include reverse stenciling, assemblage and applying encaustic to 3D forms. Daily slide presentations will expose participants to a variety of artists working with encaustic. Participants will be each provided with a hot palette, heatgun, torch, encaustic assortment kit, encaustic medium, pigment sticks, monotype paper,panels/supports, pigments, ground, stencils and much more. Open to beginning, middle, and advanced students.

Special Topics in Art: Forts, Sanctuaries, and Secret Shelters (AR5560.02)

Students will embark on a guided sculptural exploration of previously unshared truths using natural and man made media.  In this hands on workshop, we will probe the concept of revelation and public exposure as contrasted with the deeply personal and confidential.  A variety of media  ( plastics, fabrics, and paints) and natural materials  – ( saplings, limbs, rocks, gravel, and shells) will be used to evoke discoveries during the model making process. Each participant will develop a model after which teams will work together to realize selected designs on a larger scale. The course will be held both indoors and outdoors on location in the surrounding environment.

Special Topics in Art: Foam Plate Printmaking

Explore the possibilities of printing on polystyrene foam plates  as a block printing medium with water based inks. Students will be able to approach this versatile medium in ways that facilitate the creative process. Explores reduction printing, multi-plate printing and printing over acrylic paint, texturization effects, and printing on various surfaces. Foam Plate printmaking utlilizes water-base inks and foam plates. Plates can be purchased or collected through recycling. This is a chemical free approach to printmaking that is as safe for children as adults and can be implemented in a home studio with ease.

Special Topics in Art: The Emotional Landscape (AR 5560.03)

The course is designed for Classroom Teachers, Art Teachers, Environmental Scientists, Photographers, Graphic Designers, or anyone that enjoys the outdoors and wants to improve their artistic representation of the environment. We will not just be after “pretty pictures,” but images that portray imagination, history of place, concern of environment, personal connection to locale, etc. The course will provide students with the technical skills and confidence to transform their feelings for a chosen locale into an image that can be used artistically, commercially, or personally. Landscapes along the spectrum from scenic to urban will be discussed.

The class is open to photographic beginners and will include darkroom and digital techniques (Photoshop), field trips, and simple graphic design skills (InDesign). The projects covered are adaptable to different grade levels, languages, or artistic abilities, as darkroom techniques will be limited to film development and contact printing. A film camera would be beneficial (medium format -120 film – even better); a digital camera with manual controls is a must. Students will make Silver Gelatin panoramas, digital photographic “joiners,” and produce a piece of work to coincide the Weeks act of 1911.

Special Topics in Art: Funky, Folded Books (AR 5560.01)

This course is designed for art teachers, classroom teachers, ESL teachers, or anyone that just enjoys books and the messages they contain within. These projects can be adapted to any grade level, language, and artistic ability since they are folded books rather than sewn. We will explore how language and art connect, and integrate simple writing exercises into the books. Students will have the choice to make various books such as a circular book, multiple directional accordion book, spiral book, star book, book with pockets, eco-books amongst others – each with multiple adaptations. During the class, students will make at least one book a day, using a different medium/technique taught each day. Students will choose their own themes and one common theme at the end of the week.   Art techniques include non-toxic magazine transfers, basic “sloppy” contour drawing, printmaking, various watercolor and tempera paint methods and using personal or magazine photos and text, etc. Covers will be made of fabric, magazine pictures or special papers. We will have a formal display and critique of the work on the final day including a capstone project along with an artist statement.

Prior experience with bookmaking, nor art is not needed. No required text books, though the instructor will provide visuals, articles, reference books and a list of references. Feel free to bring any photos, special papers or any other you would like to use. Join us for a week filled of inspiration, fun, sharing, exploring and creating.

Special Topics in Art: Integrating Art and Nature for Educators (AR 5560.WV)

This course provides an opportunity for immersion in a specialized topic/area concerning studio art, art history, multicultural arts traditions, special education, technology, graphic design, and/or art education, which contemporary art educators address as professionals, guest artists, educators and professionals working with faculty members are invited to teach this course and share their experience and expertise in selected areas of specialization.  Students may repeat this course when it is offered under a different topic.

Exploring the arts in nature can provide students with an opportunity to reflect and study their natural surroundings through close observation.  This course provides educators with opportunities to engage in nature firsthand, to get up close and personal with natural surroundings and to create ways to bring nature into the classroom.  We will explore professional nature journalists, ways in which the arts can be integrated into other classroom subjects, such as science, and why engaging students in nature is more important now than ever before.

Students should bring clothing and shoes appropriate for outdoor walking and hiking. Outdoor activity will not be strenuous (slow and short walks will be taken). All activity levels are welcome.  Please plan for all types of weather.

Contemporary Challenges in Art Education: En Plein Air Watercolor (AE5020.01)

This course will offer students the opportunity to have a concentrated experience working en plein air in the New Hampshire landscape.  Working from life students will articulate and render their local surroundings. Students will learn and work with a variety of different media while developing their own vision and stylistic tendencies.   This is a drawing based course.  We will start in the vicinity exploring scenic places in the Plymouth area, and expand our territory to neighboring towns as the course develops.  Locations will include some of the different environments New Hampshire has to offer, mountains, woods, lakes, streams, and neighborhoods etc.  Students will rely on driving and carpooling and meet most often at the location we plan to work at.  Studio time and days will also be incorporated for students to work on an ongoing out of class project.  The instructor will offer methods of working and discussion, as well as provide relevant reading material and resources, including books and slide presentations for further study.  Materials will include dry and water media, and students will work in value and in color.  This will be a studio-based course involving creative production, research, exploration of media, and the development of a coherent body of work.  Open to participants at all levels of experience.
