Despite having been born with an innate sense of gender equity, as in "Why does my Brother do these chores and I have to do these other chores!?", I remember the moment of my political/feminist awakening. I was walking in downtown Tallahassee, Florida when I noticed that an ERA office had recently opened. It was the early 1980's and there was a last ditch effort to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. We needed 3/4's of the State legislatures to ratify it, and the Southern States and Utah had not done so. Despite the fact that one could argue that there were more important issues to pursue, there were tremendous resources and energy funneled into this effort, and being part of this movement was nothing short of transforming. I have been active in feminist, democratic, and GLBTQ issues ever since. My first activity with Women's Studies was at PSU. My primary involvement with Women's Studies is through a course called, "Women and Their Environments," a collaborative, integrative course in which I address women and technology. I believe strongly that society will be best served with women's equal participation in technology development, and I strive to make technology-oriented curriculum accessible to people of all genders, classes, and races. In order to do so, I have had to leave the Computer Science and Technology Department and join the Communication and Media Studies Department. I am developing curriculum with Cathie LeBlanc in Digital Media and Game Development to achieve this end.
