Sara Jayne Steen

Sara Jayne became the 14th president of Plymouth State University on July 1, 2006. Steen, who served most recently as the dean of the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University, was chosen by the University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees to lead PSU. She has more than 30 years of experience in higher education as a faculty member and senior administrator.

The first in her family to attend college, Steen received a BS in Education (English, Speech) at Bowling Green State University in 1970, an MA in English at The Ohio State University in 1974, and her PhD in English at Bowling Green State University in 1978. In 2002 she participated in a year-long American Council on Education fellowship to study higher education administration at the University of Delaware. From 1996 to 2002 Steen chaired the Department of English at Montana State and a full professor of English since 1989. She was a professor at the University beginning in 1978 and in 1996, received the President’s Distinguished Teaching Award from MSU.

In a recent interview she said, “I like helping other people succeed, and that’s really what you’re doing as an administrator … it’s seeing how to do something and making it happen for students and faculty.”
