Honorary Doctor of Public Service Awarded to Carmen Milagros Ortiz
Carmen Milagros Ortiz prosecuted white-collar crime in the U.S. Attorney Office’s Economic Crimes Unit for 12 years before President Obama nominated her for U.S. Attorney and the United States Senate voted unanimously to confirm her in November 2009. She is the first woman and the first Hispanic to serve as U.S. Attorney in the District of Massachusetts. During her tenure, Ortiz helped send corrupt state lawmakers to prison and increased prosecutions of white-collar crime. She also implemented the District’s first civil rights initiative.
Ortiz, who stepped down from her position in January after nine years, will receive an honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service, in recognition of her distinguished career in law and public service.
