Since 2002 I’ve been teaching undergraduate natural science courses geared specifically toward non-science majors. Too many world citizens are alienated from science and are thus science-phobic; this does not bode well for major policy decisions in many important societal realms. I want my students to understand connections between science, ecology, and major current issues whose connection to science might not be clear at first glance. I also want them to discover and develop their own best learning styles. My goal is to instill feelings of competence and self-empowerment in my students, resulting in enhanced engagement with the larger world as their lives progress.
