EMERGING: Annual PSU Student Juried Art Exhibition 2021

The 2021 exhibition will be presented both physically in the Museum Gallery and as on online exhibition.

New this year: Select submitted photographs of artworks will be printed to become part of an outdoor campus display!

Online submission will be live Nov 6- Feb 12
Online submission closes 12am Feb 12

How it works:

The competition is open to ALL PSU students.

Students take photographs of their artworks. Be sure to take a good quality photo that shows your work in the best light. The artworks can be from class work or made independently. You will identify which class/independent work on the submission form.

You can submit up to 3 artworks.

Selection Process:

Artworks will be judged by 2 jurors:

Kim Bernard
Kim Bernard creates sculpture that is recycled, kinetic, interactive, public and involves the community. She creates installations upcycled out of trash and is currently focusing on transforming plastic waste into sculpture using her portable recycling machines. She shows her work nationally and has been invited to participate in many exhibits, some of which include the Portland Museum of Art, Currier Museum of Art, Fuller Craft Museum, Harvard University, Art Complex Museum and UNH Museum of Art. Her work has been reviewed in the Boston Globe, Art News and Art New England. Bernard is the recipient of the Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant, Kindling Fund Grant, NEFA grant and several Maine Arts Commission Grants. She was an artist-in-residence in the Physics Department at Harvard University and at the University of New England. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1987 and her MFA from Mass Art in 2010. Bernard mentors emerging artists individually and teaches professional development to artists nationally.

Samantha Cataldo
Samantha Cataldo is curator of contemporary art at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she organizes exhibitions, stewards the postmodern and contemporary collections, and manages artist programs. She is founding curator of the Currier Museum’s Artist-in-Residence program (est. 2018). Recent and upcoming exhibitions include Ethan Murrow: Hauling (2018–2019), We Are For Freedoms (2019–2020), Critical Cartography: Larissa Fassler in Manchester (2020), and Alexandria Smith: Memoirs of a Ghost Girlhood, A Black Girl’s Window (2021).

Artworks will be judged by level (from beginner classes to advanced classes to independent work)
Selections will be made based on:
Quality of the artwork CONCEPT
Quality of the artwork EXECUTION
Quality of the artwork PRESENTATION

Notification of Results:

Artists will be notified by email on Feb 19, whether their artwork(s) have been accepted into the exhibit or not, and whether their artwork image has been selected for the outdoor display.

Accepted artworks will be dropped off at the Museum Feb 23-25 (9am-5pm)
Exhibition will be launched March 3
