LINCOLN, N.H. – It was another strong day for the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams Saturday in the giant slalom races at the Brown University Winter Carnival held at Loon Mountain.
In the men’s format, nine of the 10 schools divided their teams into two squads, and PSU teams finished first and sixth among the 19 teams. The Panther women skied to a fourth place finish among the 10 schools, matching their best GS finish of the season.
PSU used strong depth to win the men’s race, with five Panthers finishing in the top 10 among the nearly 100 skiers in the race. Freshman Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.), who captured first place in Saturday’s slalom race at Tenney Mountain, came back in Sunday’s GS with a fourth place to lead PSU. Junior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) and senior Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) were right behind in fifth and sixth, respectively, while sophomores Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) and Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) were eighth and 10th.
Senior All-America Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) led the Panther women’s contingent, bringing home third place overall to equal her best finish of the year. Sophomores Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) came in a solid 14th for PSU, and sophomores Kelsey Real (Lanesboro, Mass.) and Kristina Hoch (China, Maine) were 23rd and 24th.
PSU’s ‘A’ team won the men’s scoring, while the ‘B’ team finished sixth. UMass ‘A’ was runner-up, followed by Babson ‘A’, Brown ‘A’, and Babson ‘B’. The women’s scoring, using the regular format, has UMass first, followed by Brown, Boston College, PSU, Smith, Colby-Sawyer, MIT, Saint Anselm, Babson, and UConn.
The ski racing continues next weekend with the Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain (Vt.), with the slalom on Saturday and the GS on Sunday.
