Exhibition Opening, Saturday, March 13, 3-5 p.m. Lamson Library
Dr. Lorenzo Pace presented an exhibition at the Karl Drerup Art Gallery this fall, at which time the gallery and Friends of the Arts launched an education outreach program for the community that included teachers and school children. That program is expected to grow significantly in the next few years.
Throughout the workshop, Dr. Pace shared fresh ideas about oral history, story telling, diversity and integrated arts with the classroom teachers.
To demonstrate for the community, the positive outcomes and benefits of outreach to educators and children, a special exhibition has been created for Lamson Library of art work created during the workshop for teachers. Participating teachers used family objects to inspire written stories and to create masks that reveal information about their families and their personal journeys, following Dr. Pace’s theme of “An American Story.”
The Library event will allow the teachers to greet Dr. Pace and show him the work they created from his workshop. University students will also have opportunities to meet with the teachers and Dr. Pace to talk about adapting the workshop project for classroom use.
There will be a public reading of Pace’s book, Jalani and the Lock at the Library at 10:30 a.m. the same day. Dr. Catherine Amidon, director of the gallery says, “This reading gives us an opportunity to remind members of the Plymouth community that the Karl Drerup Art Gallery, in partnership with other groups and departments, is a resource for area children.
