WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Jeff Ilvonen (Auburn, Mass.) scored two goals Thursday night to lead Assumption College to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference make-up game at Buffone Rink. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 22nd, but was snowed out.
The two teams, which tied 7-7 in the season-opening game back in November, were very close again on Thursday in a game that included only four penalties, two on each team, and four goals, two in the final minute of play.
Assumption got a goal in the final minute of the first period from junior Bobby Fanciullo (Medford, Mass.) to lead 1-0 after one frame, and Ilvonen’s first goal of the game late in the second period gave the IceDogs a 2-0 lead after two. PSU broke the shutout and made things interesting on junior Dennis Kane’s (Westford, Mass.) goal with 39 seconds remaining, but Ilvonen’s second goal of the game into an empty net with 15 seconds left clinched it for Assumption.
The hosts had the advantage in shots the first two periods, but PSU outshot the IceDogs 11-5 in the third period. Assumption finished with a 27-24 advantage for the game. PSU freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 24 saves on 26 shots, while Assumption junior Frank Landino (Milford, Conn.) earned the win with a 23-save effort.
PSU returns home for a key ECAC Northeast Conference game Saturday at Waterville Valley Ice Arena against Fitchburg State (6:00 p.m.). The Falcons are in fourth place in the Northeast while the Panthers are in sixth. Fitchburg State defeated Plymouth State earlier this season in a non-conference game, 7-4.
