PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University has a big hole to fill following the resignation of Physical Education Center Coordinator Peter Cofran, who announced Tuesday that he is leaving PSU to become the athletic director at Newfound Regional High School.

Cofran, a 1974 graduate of Plymouth State who has worked in the athletic department for the past 23 years and at PSU 28 of the last 33 years, will take over at Newfound later this month.

“I had no intention of leaving the place I’ve worked the past 23 years,” said Cofran, a resident of Plymouth from 1974-2004 and Holderness since 2004. “This opportunity came along at the right time for me and my family. Being an athletic director is something I’ve often thought about, and this is the perfect opportunity at the right place and the right time.”

Cofran is no stranger to high school sports. He was the girls softball coach at Plymouth Regional High School from 1974-83 and 1990-2004, and girls basketball coach at PRHS from 1974-83 and 1989-91. He has also been very involved with the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association for decades.

“We have very mixed feelings about Peter’s decision,” said PSU athletic director John P. Clark. “We are very happy for Peter and this opportunity for him; we know it’s something he’s wanted for a long time and we wish him the very best. We are also sad to lose such a valuable member of our team, the Plymouth State team. He meant so much to the department and most of all, to Plymouth State University. He’s one of the icons in the history of our institution.”

A student body president as an undergraduate, Cofran worked five years (1974-79) after graduation for Plymouth State’s department of residential life. After stints as a substitute teacher, a high school resource room aide and a firefighter, Cofran came back to Plymouth State as athletic equipment manager in 1984. He served as assistant director of athletics from 1985-89, and has been the Physical Education Center Coordinator since 1989. He was also Plymouth State’s director of summer conferences from 1989-2003 and has been the athletics home events coordinator since 2003.

Cofran has been very involved in the campus community at Plymouth State, serving on a long list of committees. He received the Plymouth State Alumni Achievement Award in 1986, Plymouth State Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1996, and the Distinguished Professional, Administrative and Technical Employee of the Year Award in 1996.
