LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.) recorded his first collegiate hat trick and added an assist Wednesday afternoon to lead the Bates College men’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference match.
Bates, rated 10th in New England in the latest poll, handed Plymouth State, rated seventh, its second loss of the season. The Bobcats are now 8-2-2 and the Panthers are 9-2-3.
Morin assisted on the first goal of the game in the 18th minute by senior Terrence O’Connell (Greenwich, Conn.), his New England Small College Athletic Conference-leading 10th of the season. Morin scored his first goal with just over two minutes remaining in the second half, putting the hosts up 2-0 at the intermission. Plymouth State would also have to play a man down after the break as a player received a red card.
Sophomore Alex Marin (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) put the Panthers on the board in the 59th minute, with an assist from freshman Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.), but Morin answered with two goals in the next two minutes for the Bobcats to take away any Panther momentum.
Marin set up sophomore Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.) for PSU’s second goal with 10 minutes remaining, but the Bobcats would not allow another goal the rest of the way.
Bates finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots. Sophomores Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) and Rob Munroe (Walpole, Mass.) combined to make four saves for the winners, while PSU freshman keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) also made four saves.
The Panthers return to Little East Conference action Saturday, hosting Rhode Island College in a 3:00 p.m. match-up at Panther Field. Bates hosts Middlebury Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Bobcats’ final home game.
