WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Both Plymouth State University ski teams finished in third place Sunday in the men’s and women’s giant slalom standings at the PSU Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley.
The Panther men’s team took third place among nine schools, finishing behind Colby-Sawyer and Boston College and ahead of UMass Amherst, Babson, MIT, UConn, Brown, and Saint Anselm. The Panther women tied for third with Colby-Sawyer among 10 teams, trailing Boston College and UMass Amherst but in front of Brown, Smith, MIT, UConn, Saint Anselm and Babson.
Sophomore Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y./Northwood School) and senior Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) continued to lead the Panthers with top finishes. Caflisch placed second overall among the 64 skiers in the women’s race, while Harlow finished fifth among the 79 in the men’s race. Caflisch has a third place and two second places in three races this season, while Harlow has finished in the top five in all three of his starts this winter.
Both Panther teams have solid depth, which was on display Sunday with four PSU finishers among the top 18 in both men’s and women’s races, and five in the top 21. Seniors Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) and Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) supported Harlow with 10th and 11th place finishes, respectively, while sophomore Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) was 18th and freshman Brad Deitch (New City, N.Y.) 21st. Sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was PSU’s second-best finisher in the women’s race, placing 12th, followed by freshman Paige Frohock (Boise, Idaho) in 16th, junior Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) in 18th, and freshman Katie Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) in 21st.
The PSU teams return to competition next Saturday with slalom races at Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, Mass.
