BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior Katie Balboni (Townsend, Mass.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Bridgewater State College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference field hockey game.
The win was the first for Bridgewater State over Plymouth State since 1994. The Bears improve to 6-7 overall and 5-3 in the Little East, while the Panthers drop their fourth straight to fall to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The Bears took the lead just 1:42 into the game with a goal off the stick of Balboni. Junior Ashley Panzini (Saugus, Mass.) tallied the assist as she increased her team-leading total to six. Balboni and the Bears struck again early in the second half as she netted what proved to be the game winner. The goal was assisted by senior Heather Eldridge (Barnstable, Mass.)
Plymouth State cut the lead in half midway through the second half as senior Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game. Bridgewater State, however, was able to hold on with another strong performance from junior goalkeeper Nicole Downs (Hanover, Mass.) who recorded six saves for the victory. PSU finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots.
Bridgewater State is on the road for a pair of LEC games next week, visiting Salem State on Wednesday and Fitchburg State on Saturday. After four straight road games and six of its last seven away from home, Plymouth State returns home to host Fitchburg State on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.)
