BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore Taryn Sullivan (Hanover, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal with just over 15 minutes remaining in the second half Wednesday afternoon to lift Bridgewater State College to a 2-1 win over Plymouth State University in a non-conference women’s soccer match-up at BSC’s Swenson Field. Bridgewater improves to 2-1 on the season while PSU drops to 1-3-1.
Sullivan’s goal, her first of the season, came off a perfectly placed corner kick by fellow sophomore Nicole Sidor (Whitman, Mass.). Sullivan positioned herself on the far side of the goal and headed the ball directly into the back of the net.
BSC senior Christine Spellman (Plymouth, Mass.) opened the scoring early in the first half as she picked up a loose ball from 20 yards out a drilled a low shot past the diving goaltender and into the right corner of the net. The Panthers evened the score at 1-1 in the game’s 21st minute as junior Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) capitalized on a turnover deep in Bridgewater’s end. McBride dribbled in from the right side of the box and chipped a shot just over the outstretched hand of the BSC keeper and into the far corner of the net.
Junior Emily Schlosser (Petersham, Mass.) improved her record to 2-1 as she tallied six saves in goal for the Bears. Plymouth State senior Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) took the loss for the Panthers despite recording nine saves. The hosts finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday when they head to Babson College (11:00 a.m.) The Panthers return to the field on Saturday as well as they open up the Little East Conference schedule against the Beacons of UMass-Boston (4:00 p.m.) at Panther Field.
