WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman Steve Culbertson (Bowling Green, Ohio) scored a short-handed goal with 1:52 remaining Tuesday night to lead Castleton State College to a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference men’s ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The game-winning goal came just a little over minute after Plymouth State had tied the game with a power play goal. The win gives the Spartans their first win of the season (1-1-1), while the Panthers lost for the fourth time in five outings (1-4-0).
Freshman Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.) gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with a power play goal 4:38 into the first period. The Spartans pulled even with 34 seconds to go in the opening frame on a goal by sophomore Ryan Bartlett (Brunswick, Maine).
After a scoreless second period, Castleton State took a 2-1 lead at the 7:11 mark of the third period when sophomore Jeff Lazeran (Marquette, Mich.) deflected in a shot from the point by junior Matt Link (Clifton Park, N.Y.). That looked like it might be the game-winner, but junior Topo LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) evened the game at 2-2 with 3:10 on the third-period clock.
Culbertson stole the puck in the neutral zone and worked a give-and-go with sophomore Ross Carmichael (Jacobstown, N.J.) for the game-winner at 18:08.
Castleton State doubled up PSU in shots on goal, 36-18. The Spartans were 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Panthers were 2-for-14.
Sophomore goalie Jeff Swanson (Grand Haven, Mich.) earned the victory for CSC with 16 saves. PSU freshman netminder Mick Fitzpatrick (Lancaster, N.Y.) finished with 33 saves.
PSU returns to action this weekend at the Police Athletic League (PAL) Stovepipe Tournament in Manchester, N.H. The Panthers will take on Brockport State Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at The Ice Den in Manchester, with Southern New Hampshire facing Suffolk at 4:00 p.m.
