the Environment Names June Hammond Rowan
Outreach and Development Coordinator

June Hammond Rowan has been named
Outreach and Development Coordinator for Plymouth State
University’s Center for the Environment, effective
February 14.

Prior to joining PSU, Rowan was an environmental planner
for the state of New Hampshire. She previously served as
the town planner for Berlin, and more recently in

Steve Kahl, director for the Center for the Environment
says, “June is a geographer and community planner
with experience and passion for a sustainable
environment. This background is perfect for the goals of
the Center, which are to provide a program that is
balanced in science, economics and social aspects of the

In her new position Rowan will be working to, “Take
the message of the Center for the Environment, which is a
regional focus on science policy, and translate it back
into the community, region, state and beyond so people
can understand policy-orientated issues.” On the
development side, Rowan plans to apply for grants to fund
faculty research and support student projects.

Rowan is very excited about her new position as moving
back into academics has been her long term goal. For her,

Rowan holds a master’s degree in geography from the
University of Colorado and a bachelor’s degree in
geography from the University of Chicago. She has also
been an adjunct professor for NH Community Technical
College, a staff scientist for the Appalachian Mountain

She wrote and edited Mountain
Summers: Tales of Hiking and Exploration in the White
Mountains from 1878 to 1886 as seen through the Eyes of
and numerous articles.
