WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.) scored his second goal of the game 52 seconds into overtime Saturday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men’s ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Freshman goalie Mick Fitzpatrick (Lancaster, N.Y.) also had another strong game for the Panthers, stopping 39 of 41 shots. Chambers and Fitzpatrick helped PSU improve to 3-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Northeast, while Salve Regina, which got both of its goals from junior Mike Mallette (Chepachet, R.I.), dips to 2-7-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.
Senior Derek Avakian (Edgartown, Mass.) gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season at the 7:38 mark of the first period. Chambers tallied an unassisted marker just 15 seconds later to make it a 2-0 PSU lead. Mallette cut the margin in half with his first goal at 12:25 of the opening frame.
It stayed a 2-1 game until midway through the third period, when Mallette knocked home his second of the game and team-leading sixth of the game. Salve outshot PSU 18-6 in the third period and 41-29 for the game, but it was 2-2 at the end of regulation. The Panthers killed off two major penalties in the third period, when Fitzpatrick made 17 saves.
Chambers won it for PSU in overtime with his second of the game and team-leading 10th of the season.
Plymouth State Is back on the ice Tuesday with a non-conference game at New England College (7:00 p.m.) Salve returns home to host Suffolk on Tuesday (8:00 p.m.)
