PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) scored a season-high 31 points Tuesday evening to lift the Plymouth State University men’s basketball team to a 74-56 victory over Rivier College in non-conference action at Foley Gymnasium.
Chergey made 14-of-20 shots from the floor, mostly from the paint area, for his 31 points. He also collected four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes, helping PSU stop a two-game losing skid and improve to 5-2 overall. The Panthers also got 10 points from sophomore Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.)
Chergey’s 31-point effort was the most points for a Plymouth State player since Andreas Pope scored 35 in a win over Bridgewater State on Dec. 8, 2005.
Rivier, which lost its second straight after opening the season at 3-0, got 15 points from senior Chris Giordano (Medford, Mass.), 13 points from junior Jeff Carpenter (Meredith, N.H.), and 10 points from senior John McMahon (Somerville, Mass.)
The upset-minded Raiders gave PSU all it could handle in the first half, leading by one point (14-13) eight minutes into the game and trailing by just five points (33-28) with two minutes to go in the half. The Panthers ended up with an eight-point margin (36-28) at the break.
PSU scored the opening bucket of the second half to make it a 10-point advantage, but it was still a 10-point game (61-51) with five minutes to play. The Panthers and Chergey had too much for the Raiders, and pulled away in the final five minutes.
The Panthers held Rivier to a 31.3 shooting percentage while connecting at a 52.6 percent clip themselves.
PSU plays another non-conference game Thursday at Bridgewater State (8:00 p.m.) before hosting Little East Conference pre-season favorite Rhode Island College Saturday at Foley Gymnasium (3:00 p.m.) Rivier hosts Mount Ida Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
