PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior tailback Jon Tillman (Montoursville, Pa.) rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to a 49-12 Freedom Football Conference victory over Plymouth State University at Currier Field.
Tillman finished with 185 all-purpose yards, including four receptions to 43 yards, helping the Bears outgain the Panthers in total yards, 439-174. Coast Guard broke its five-game losing streak and improved its record to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the FFC, while PSU drops to 0-8 and 0-5.
Sophomore quarterback Cory Anderson (Scottsdale, Az.) completed 19-of-34 passes for 194 yards and one TD for the Bears. Junior wide receiver Nick Seniuk (Stroudsburg, Pa.), CGA’s leading receiver, caught six passes for 64 yards and his first TD of the season.
Anderson put the Bears on the board on their first possession of the game, capping a nine-play drive with a one-yard TD sneak. Anderson then connected with Seniuk late in the first quarter on a 35-yard scoring play to make it a 14-0 game.
The Bears went ahead 28-0 in the second quarter on a pair of Tillman touchdowns, from three and five yards out. Tillman added his third score of the day, from seven yards out, five minutes into the third quarter to make it 35-0, and the rout was on.
Plymouth State got on the board with 9:23 remaining in the contest when sophomore Jeremy Roberts (Fair Haven, Vt.) capped a nine-play drive with a one-yard plunge. It broke a long drought for the Panthers as it was PSU’s first points since scoring a touchdown against William Paterson on Sept. 20. The scoring drive included freshman QB Mike Griggs (Hudson, N.H.) rushing for 32 yards on three carries and senior RB Jason Bordas (Elmore, Vt.) adding 16 yards on four carries.
Freshman reserve RB Josh Williams (Austin, Texas) added a 16-yard TD run for the Bears with six minutes remaining. CGA scored its final TD after capitalizing on a blocked punt deep in Panther territory. Junior RB Anthony Brino (Rosamond, Cal.) gained 17 yards on the next play but fumbled at the one yard line and junior Dave Ratner (Battle Creek, Mich.) fell on it in the end zone for the touchdown.
PSU rounded out the scoring with nine seconds remaining when freshman QB Tye Seastedt (Danville, N.H.) hit senior WR Matt Coddaire (Chelmsford, Mass.) with a 10-yard TD pass.
PSU plays its final home game of the season next Saturday at 12 noon against non-conference Southern Connecticut. Coast Guard returns home to host WPI and Kings Point in its final two contests.
