PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Joel Ashton (Sturbridge, Mass.) capped an eighth-inning rally with a two-run triple Thursday afternoon as Colby-Sawyer College came from behind to register an 11-9 non-conference baseball victory over Plymouth State University at Panther Park.
The Chargers came from behind three times to pull out the see-saw victory. There was plenty of offense, as Plymouth State knocked out 17 hits and Colby-Sawyer had 14. Colby-Sawyer improves its season record to 12-16, while PSU fell to 3-20.
Senior Jon Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) led the visitors with three hits and three runs scored, and junior Chris Ames (Franklin, N.H.) contributed a key three-run double in the third inning. Ashton and senior Rian McCarthy (Middletown, R.I.) each had two hits, and freshman Steve Hansen (Southbury, Conn.) cracked his first home run of the season.
The top two batters in the PSU order, junior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.) combined for nine hits, including four for extra bases, and tied two school records. Guimond matched the PSU single-game standard with five hits, including a triple and two RBI, while Hall, who had four hits and four RBI, equaled the school single-game mark with three doubles. Senior Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) and freshmen Nick Jaskolka (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) each collected two hits, including Jaskolka’s two-run, third inning double.
Freshman Nik Emerson (Gorham, N.H.) picked up his first career win (1-0) with two-and-a-third innings of one-hit relief. PSU freshman Tim Conway (Bedford, N.H./West) took the loss (1-2).
PSU is home again this Saturday with a Little East Conference doubleheader against the University of Southern Maine (12:00 p.m.), while Colby-Sawyer plays a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill Friday at Nichols (1:00 p.m.).
