PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Kerry D’Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) recorded her first career hat trick Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 6-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference field hockey contest at Arold Field.
D’Ambroise scored her first goal 1:11 into the game, and PSU never looked back. It was 2-0 a minute later and 3-0 at halftime before the Panthers cruised home with the win, outshooting the visitors for the game, 15-1.
PSU won its second straight and improved to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in LEC play, while Eastern dropped its fifth in a row and fell to 3-12 overall and 3-7 in the LEC. The two teams had entered the game tied for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming LEC Tournament.
Freshman Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.), senior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Amanda Sherburne (Rumney, N.H./Plymouth Reg.) all added a goal and an assist to the Panther offense, and senior Amanda Spafafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) collected an assist. Smith’s first goal made it 2-0 just over two minutes into the game, and D’Ambroise’s second tally made it 3-0 by halftime. Bates, Sherburne and D’Ambroise all scored for PSU in the second half.
PSU junior Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) needed to make only one save to record her first shutout of the season. Freshman Mindy Maher (Sherman, Conn.) made nine saves for the Warriors.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season with two games this week – a non-conference encounter Tuesday at home against Springfield (3:00 p.m.) and a Little East game Saturday at Framingham State (2:00 p.m.) ECSU plays a non-conference game Sunday at New England College (2:00 p.m.)
