PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Plymouth State College was defeated 8-1 Saturday in women’s tennis by the defending Little East Conference champion Rhode Island College.
The loss drops PSC below the .500 mark at 4-5 overall. RIC improves to 8-1.
The only winner for PSC was junior Becky Stanley (Peterborough, NH), who captured a three-set victory over RIC’s Erica DiNuccio at No. 3 singles. The Panthers nearly pulled an upset at No. 4, but sophomore Sarah Kasuba (Stratford, Conn.) was defeated 6-4 in the third set by Donna Vongratsavay.
RIC won all three doubles matches, but not before sophomore Stacy Wright (Harwich, Mass.) and freshman Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine) forced extended their opponents to a 9-7 decision in a eight-game pro-set at No. 3 doubles.
The Panthers return home for the last dual match of the season on Monday, Oct. 9, against St. Anselm College (3 p.m.) The annual Little East Conference Championships are next weekend (Oct. 14-15) at Rhode Island College.
