BANGOR, Maine – Sophomore fullback John DeMarco (Milford, N.H.) rushed 27 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon, leading Plymouth State University to a dramatic 21-19 victory over Husson College in a non-conference football game at the Winkin Complex.
Plymouth State held on for the victory when a Husson 26-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining hit the upright and stayed out. The Panthers upped their record to 3-5 overall while Husson dropped to 2-3.
DeMarco got PSU on the board first with a 7-yard TD run. The score was set up when junior Tim Butler (Concord, Mass.) blocked a Husson punt. PSU would block two punts and two extra points on the day.
The Eagles answered back with a 1-yard plunge by freshman Darius Charlton (South Plantation, Fla.). Husson took the lead on a five-yard TD by freshman Julius Williams (Boston, Mass), but PSU’s blocked PAT attempts on both Husson scores gave the hosts only a 12-7 advantage.
PSU regained the lead on the next drive, going 60 yards on seven plays with DeMarco finishing the drive with a 4-yard run. The Panther drive continued after a roughing-the-passer call on a fourth-down-and-seven. Junior quarterback Tye Seastedt (Danville, N.H.) connected on a 31-yard pass to sophomore Brad Largy (Litchfield, N.H.) on the next play, taking PSU down to the Husson 11 yard line, and DeMarco did the rest with three straight rushes to cap off the drive. PSU held on to the 13-12 lead at halftime.
The second half was a game in the trenches with both teams featuring the running game and neither finding a great deal of success. PSU put together a 9-play, 49-yard drive, with DeMarco doing the work, carrying eight times on the drive for 45-yards and capping it off with a one-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion put PSU up 21-12 after three quarters.
PSU seemed to have the game in hand, but the Panthers fumbled the ball, giving it back to Husson on the PSU 20-yard line. After a Husson penalty forced the Eagles into a 4th-down-and-11 at the PSU 31, junior QB David Chase (Sabattus, Maine) and sophomore James Dobson (Berwick, ME) connected on a 31-yard touchdown into the right corner pulling the Eagles to 21-18. Freshman Darren Gauthier (Durham, Maine) would connect on the extra point to make it 21-19, setting up the dramatic final three minutes.
After the Eagle defense held and forced PSU to punt from deep in its own territory, Husson took over at the Panther 22. The Eagles got to the Panther five yard line, but fourth down from the 10 yard line set up the field goal attempt by Gauthier, which hit the upright and bounced out.
PSU plays another non-conference road game next Saturday at Buffalo State (1:00 p.m.), while Husson will be at Becker College on Sunday, Oct. 30th at 1:00 p.m.
