NORTH CONWAY, N.H. – Plymouth State University juniors Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) and Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) captured individual slalom titles Friday afternoon to lead the Panther alpine ski racing teams to strong finishes at the University of Connecticut Winter Carnival held at Cranmore Mountain.
DiNapoli recorded his first career individual victory to help the PSU men’s squad capture the team title, while Caflisch won for the eighth time in her career to lead the PSU women to a second place finish. The Panther men finished ahead of (in order) Boston College, the University of Massachusetts, MIT, Colby-Sawyer College, Babson College, UConn, St. Anselm and Brown University, while the Panther women were runner-up to Colby-Sawyer but ahead of BC, Brown, Smith College, UMass, St. Anselm, UConn, Babson and MIT.
PSU had three of the top six finishers among the 80 racers in the men’s slalom. Junior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) was right behind DiNapoli in second place, with senior Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) in sixth. The next best finishers for the Panther men were freshmen Chris Carlucci (Mahopac, N.Y.) and sophomore Seth Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 15th and 17th, respectively.
Sophomore Kate Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) was the second Panther finisher behind Caflisch, placing eighth among the 70 racers. Freshman Shelley Bowen (Gilford, N.H.) came in 11th, with freshman Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) and junior Meaghann McKenney (Hubbardston, Mass.) placing 17th and 18th, respectively.
The Panther squads are back in action next weekend (Jan. 20-21) with the PSU Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley, with the slalom races set for Saturday and the GS slated for Sunday.
