PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Dave Carpenter (Redding, Conn.) recorded two goals and three assists Saturday afternoon as Eastern Connecticut State University spoiled Plymouth State University’s men’s lacrosse home opener with a 14-10 Little East Conference victory at Panther Field.
Eastern Conn. led 5-2 after one period and 10-4 at halftime before holding off the surging Panthers. The Warriors improve to 5-3 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0, while PSU drops to 3-6 overall and suffered its first LEC loss of the season in three decisions. Plymouth State had lost 11 in a row to Eastern before upsetting the Warriors in the semifinals of last year’s ECAC New England Tournament.
Sophomore Tyler Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) and senior Brian Weigand (Manhasset, N.Y.) also scored three goals each for the winners, and junior Chris Elrod (Riverside, Conn.) and senior Rob Quamily (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) added two goals and one assist apiece. Junior Kyle MacDonald (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Jon Snedeker (Southington, Conn.) also chipped in with one goal each.
Sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) paced the Panther effort with three goals and three assists. Senior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) also scored three times for PSU, while classmate Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) added a pair and freshman Dan Maiorana (Walpole, Mass.) and Nate Gooden (New Boston, N.H.) scored once each.
Prescott scored two goals in the opening frame to give the visitors a 5-2 lead. Weigand found the net three times in the second quarter as the Warriors went up 10-4 at intermission. PSU pulled to within four goals (10-6) with 20 seconds left in the third quarter, but Elrod scored for the Warriors 12 second later to take away the Panther momentum. PSU added four goals in the fourth quarter, but Quamily, MacDonald and Elrod added insurance goals as the Warriors held off the Panthers.
Freshman Kyle Savage (Southington, Conn.) earned the victory in net for Eastern with 14 saves. Junior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 16 saves for PSU in 58 minutes, while junior Nick Grobe (Northboro, Mass.) made two saves when Valeri was serving a penalty.
PSU is right back in action Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game at Mitchell College in New London, Conn. Eastern Conn. plays at Mitchell on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.)
