BOSTON, Mass. – The Emerson College softball team posted its eighth consecutive victory Wednesday afternoon, defeating Plymouth State University 6-4 in a non-conference game at Rotch Field.
Plymouth State fell behind 6-0 as the Lions scored all six of their runs (three earned) in the second inning. PSU rallied with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and two more in the seventh, but Emerson held off the Panthers to improve to 12-3 on the season.
Emerson erupted for the six runs on six hits in the second frame. Sophomore Lindsay DeStefano (Glocester, R.I.) knocked in the first two runs with a two-run single and junior Jennifer Boyden (Chester, N.H.) finished off the rally with a two-run double.
PSU got on the board in the fourth inning when freshman Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) tripled and came around to score on a single by sophomore Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H./Dover). Freshman Leanne Barry (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton) tripled in the fifth inning and scored on a single by classmate Rachel Pothier (Reading, Mass.) for PSU’s second run.
Freshmen Leslie Sarno (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) and Barry added seventh inning triples, and Pothier’s infield grounder scored Barry, but it was too little, too late for the Panthers.
Senior Sara Toga Collings (Wilmington, Mass.) earned the complete-game win for Emerson, while senior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) took the loss for PSU.
The Panthers, 2-9 overall, open Little East Conference play this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. twinbill at UMass Dartmouth. Emerson is home again Friday with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Daniel Webster (2:30 p.m.)
