PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two of the standouts for Plymouth State College in last Saturday’s 21-14 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy have been honored by the Freedom Football Conference.
Senior running back Russ Massahos (Windham, N.H.) was named FFC Offensive Player of the Week, and senior defensive back Bobby Maylone (Manchester, N.H./Central) was selected to the FFC Defensive Honor Roll. It is the second time this season that each have been recognized by the conference.
A 5’11”, 200-pound co-captain, Massahos rushed 32 times for 145 yards the three touchdowns. He capped PSC’s first possession with a one-yard TD run, then added a 32-yard scoring burst in the second quarter on PSC’s first play after recovering a Kings Point fumble. Massahos added his third TD in the third quarter, breaking loose on a 60-yard run. He also led the Panthers in receiving with three catches for 44 yards.
A 6’0”, 195-pound safety, Maylone was credited with 10 tackles, including seven unassisted stops. Two of his tackles were in the Kings Point backfield, he broke up two pass attempts, and he recovered two fumbles, including the one that led to a Panther TD.
PSC moved from eighth to seventh in this week’s ECAC Division III New England poll. The Panthers, 3-2 overall, are tied for second in the FFC with Kings Point, both with 2-1 conference records. Western Connecticut (4-0, 2-0), which defeated defending champion Springfield last Saturday, remains the only unbeaten team in the FFC.
Plymouth State hosts Springfield this Saturday (Oct. 13) at noon in the Homecoming contest at Currier Field.
