PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College sophomore Josh Forest (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) tossed a seven-inning no-hitter Wednesday to earn his first victory of the season, leading the Panthers to a doubleheader sweep of New England College in a non-conference baseball twinbill at Panther Park.
Forest faced the minimum number of batters in the opener as the Panthers posted a 7-0 victory. PSC then came back to win the nightcap, 7-2.
Making his third start of the season, Forest struck out 10 and did not walk a batter to improve his record to 1-2. The only Pilgrim to reach base safely, freshman Nick Nozzolillo (Upper Queensbury, NB), who was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning, was erased by Forest trying to steal second base.
The PSC batters registered seven runs on seven hits in the opener and were helped by three NEC errors. Junior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) had three hits and an RBI for PSC, while classmate Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) had two hits and scored three runs. Junior Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.) added an RBI double, and freshman Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) drove in a pair with a double and a sacrifice fly.
Junior Jason Egan (Sharon, Mass.) earned the win for PSC in the nightcap, working six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out a career-high 11 to even his record at 1-1. Freshman Corey Wentworth (Freeport, Maine) worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Panthers.
Hodsdon added three more hits for PSC in the nightcap, including a double and a triple. Junior Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) drove in a pair with a two-run double, and sophomore Jay Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) contributed a single and a double and two runs knocked in.
The Panthers host pre-season Little East Conference co-favorite Southern Maine this Saturday in a double dip at Panther Park (12:00 p.m.).
